Prize Coins
Coins of large size and value struck primarily as prizes in sporting contests. this principle dates from the late fifth century BC when Syracuse minted decadrachms as prizes in the Demareteian Games. The most notable example in modem times is the lengthy series of talers and five-franc coins issued by the Swiss cantons since 1842 as prizes in the annual shooting festivals, the last of which honoured the Lucerne contest of 1939.
